KAMPALA – In a significant breakthrough, Uganda law enforcement agencies have successfully thwarted a potentially devastating terror plot by recovering six improvised explosive devices (IEDs) within a span of just two days in Kampala.
According to Uganda Police spokesperson, Senior Commissioner of Police (SCP) Fred Enanga, the first IED was intercepted on September 3, 2023.The incident occurred when vigilant police officers apprehended an individual posing as a churchgoer.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Kintu Abdulahuman, a resident of Mbizinya village in Buwama Sub County, Mpigi district, was found in possession of an IED at the main entrance of a church located in the Kayanja Triangle Zone within Lubaga Parish.
Remarkably, Abdulahuman was also in possession of a remote control detonation device. It was later revealed that he had been on the wanted list of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI).
Upon intensive interrogation, Abdulahuman confessed to being part of a larger terrorist cell comprising six members. He then cooperated with the authorities, leading them to a rented two-room house situated in Luungujja Zone 8.
In this location, a total of three additional IEDs were discovered. It is noteworthy that these rental units belonged to the Seventh Day Adventist community. Bomb disposal experts safely detonated the three IEDs while also collecting crucial evidential materials from the scene.
SCP Enanga disclosed that on the following day, five more suspects were apprehended in connection with an IED found in the Mabiito area within Nateete Central B Zone, Lubaga division of Kampala district.
The discovery of an abandoned IED at the Peaceful Guest House in Ngobe-Bunamwanya marked the sixth explosive device recovered within this short timeframe.
SCP Enanga highlighted that the number of suspects linked to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) had risen to six individuals. Law enforcement agencies remain actively engaged in counter-terrorism operations to neutralize any remaining threats.
This swift and decisive action by the authorities underscores their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the Ugandan capital and its residents, while also dealing a significant blow to potential acts of terrorism.
