RUKUNGIRI – A 44-year-old former Uganda Peoples Defence Forces officer has been shot dead in Rukungiri District.
The deceased, identified as Robert Mugabe, was a resident of Rubambura cell, Kahoko parish, Nyakagyeme sub-County.
According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, the incident occurred last night while the deceased was armed with a machete and reportedly threatening to harm his wife, Ngabirano Christine.
In response to an emergency call from Kembabazi Annet, who reported the situation, PC Asiimwe Brian, an officer attached to Rwerere police post, along with station OC No: 28074 SGT Kabeireho Isidore, went to the scene.
Maate explained that Mugabe was shot dead after he raised the machete to attack PC Asiimwe, who responded by firing a bullet. Unfortunately, Mugabe succumbed to his injuries immediately. The police spokesperson emphasized that the shooting took place in self-defense.
Following the incident, the OC post notified OC Station Rukungiri Central Police Station for further management. The D/CID/O and team promptly arrived at the scene, which was thoroughly examined, documented, and secured. Two machetes and an axe were recovered as exhibits from the scene. Additionally, a rifle with the serial number UG POL 56131005438-18145, along with 18 rounds of ammunition, was found.
Maate confirmed that Mugabe’s body was transported to Rwakabengo Health Center IV mortuary for a postmortem examination. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspect is in custody as inquiries continue.
