RUBANDA – Police in Rubanda District are currently investigating a tragic incident involving the alleged murder of two individuals.
According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi region Police Spokesperson, the victims have been identified as Mercy Orikiriza, a two-and-a-half-year-old child, and Gerald Tayebwa, a 22-year-old individual.
Tayebwa is suspected of stabbing the young child for reasons that remain unknown, leading to a swift response from local residents who pursued him and subsequently lynched him.
The incident took place on September 5th, 2023, at approximately 1:00 pm in Mushebeya cell, Omuruhinga ward, Habuhutu town council, Rubanda district. The child’s mother, Tusimireho, had left her baby in the care of Tayebwa and Night Kyoshabire while attending a village meeting.
Kyoshabire later heard the baby crying inside the house and, upon investigation, discovered that the door was locked from the inside. Tayebwa exited the house with a blood-stained knife in hand when the door was opened.
Kyoshabire found the child inside the house with a fresh eye injury wound and immediately alerted the neighbors, who then reported the incident to the Bufundi police post.
Tragically, the injured baby was rushed to Kabale referral hospital but was pronounced dead.
This heartbreaking outcome incited the anger of local residents, who took matters into their own hands and pursued Tayebwa, ultimately leading to his lynching.
The crime scene has been thoroughly investigated, a postmortem examination has been conducted, and ongoing inquiries aim to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding these tragic events.
