Why Witchcraft is on the rise in Kisoro

KISORO – Residents in Bufumbira South Constituency in Kisoro District are living in fear over the increased incidents of witchcraft allegations within their community, leading to instances of mob justice.

The most recent occurrence of mob justice related to witchcraft took place in Muramba Sub County, where a mob burned down at least three houses and brutally assaulted a woman based on accusations of practicing witchcraft. In response, law enforcement has arrested a total of 21 individuals on charges of arson and assault resulting in grievous harm, according to the Kisoro District Police Commander (DPC).

The Nyakinama Sub County Chairman, Kamuhanda Charles Bigira, says that residents in his jurisdiction are living in fear due to increased number of witchcraft cases. He highlighted the fear that a similar incident to that of Muramba might occur if the issue is not addressed promptly.
