KISORO – Kisoro District has obtained a funding injection of 600 million shillings designated for the reconstruction of the Kanyamateke Box Culvert Bridge in Busanza Sub County. This announcement was made today by Karamira James, the Engineer for Kisoro District.
The Kanyamateke Bridge, linking Buhozi Parish in Busanza Sub County to Nyabwishenya and Kirundo Sub Counties, has long been in a state of disrepair. Matters escalated last week when frustrated residents took matters into their own hands and set the bridge ablaze.
According to Karamira James, the district sought external funding from the central government to expedite the modern reconstruction of the bridge. However, to date, the government has only disbursed 600 million shillings, falling short of the required 2.5 billion shillings.
Karamira highlighted the government’s commitment to providing additional funds in the upcoming quarters, with a promise that another 600 million shillings will be allocated to the district in the next quarter. He disclosed that the district is currently in the process of securing a contractor to initiate construction, with the expectation that the project will be completed by August of next year.
